The Food Supervisor is responsible for providing for the dietary needs of Open Sky field support staff and program participants (including students and attending family members), emphasizing vendor relationships, purchasing, and process refinement. The Food Supervisor consistently improves kitchen processes and ensures best practices to support overall safety/health standards and cost control efforts. This position also supports field operations as directed by the Operations Director.

Schedule & Location

  • Operates primarily out of the Mancos, CO facility
  • Occasional time spent at Open Sky base camps near Dolores, Colorado and in South East Utah
  • Work Schedule is generally 40 hours Monday-Friday, with some longer and some shorter days

Essential Duties, Functions, and Responsibilities

  • Provide for the dietary needs of Open Sky students, attending family members, and field staff
  • Design meal plans and gathers ingredients weekly for groups of various sizes and lengths of time
  • Adapt to changing food needs and volume
  • Order, receive, and review the accuracy of all food deliveries; collaborate with the Finance team
  • Coordinate lunch for large staff groups each Wednesday and food needs for occasional Open Sky special events
  • Maintain awareness of specific student concerns with food allergens and coordinate with departments to ensure student food safety
  • Participate in Operations team meetings and food committee meetings
  • Cross-train within the operations department and support the department as needed


Must be at least 21 years old (required)

Experience working independently (required)

Experience outfitting for backcountry travel (preferred)

Knowledge of natural foods, nutrition, and outdoor food preparation (preferred)

Physical Demands

Must be able to hear and talk with other people in person and using phone and radio. Must be able to use office technology including a computer and related equipment. Must be able to frequently bend, scoop, lift, and carry loads up to 50 pounds; climb ladders; operate construction and cleaning tools, and pack/unpack vehicles and trailers.

Work Environment

Work is performed in office and outdoor settings with frequent interaction with other people. Work involves functioning in narrow aisles or passageways. Employee will be working with students who have acute mental, emotional, and behavioral healthcare needs. Employee may drive and ride in Open Sky vehicles in support of program activities.


$19 - $21/ hr
