The Student Intake Specialist, also known as the Transportation Specialist, ensures that students are greeted and escorted through the first-day admissions process in compliance with all safety standards and in alignment with the Open Sky programmatic expectations. This position typically serves as the junior member of a two-person team when driving and support student intakes. This structure provides an opportunity for the Transportation Specialist to learn and build interpersonal and logistical skills while dealing with various situations.


Shifts are generally 8-12 hours, four days per week with opportunities for overtime pay

Daily start time and end time will vary depending on student arrival time and other factors

Essential Duties Functions and Responsibilities:

Welcome new students

Assist with admissions paperwork

Accompany and supervise student visits to medical clinic for physical and drug screening

Outfit students with backpacking gear and other program items at our Mancos facility

Drive students to the Open Sky base camp in Utah and Colorado, depending on the season

Drive students for medical and other purposes while they are enrolled in the program

Maintain composure and de-escalate potentially stressful situations

Cross-train within the operations team and support as needed


Acceptable driving record and valid driver’s license

Pass pre-employment physical and drug screening, including THC

Education & Experience

Experience working with adolescents (preferred)

Experience working in mental health (preferred)

Must have a high school diploma or equivalent

Must be at least 21 years old

Skills, Licenses, Certifications

First Aid and CPR certification (within the last year) is preferred

Pass Utah, Colorado, and FBI background check.

Physical Demands

Must be able to hear and talk with other people in person and using phone and radio. Must be able to use office technology including a computer and related equipment. This position sometimes requires strenuous physical activity including, but not limited to, walking on uneven terrain, hiking up to 15 miles per day, carrying a 55+ pound backpack, and hiking at high altitude (above 5000 feet). Must be able to run at a fast pace for short to extended periods and must be able to apply benevolent holds. Employee must be able to perform these activities despite severe temperatures and adverse weather conditions.

Work Environment

Work is performed in office, vehicle, and outdoor settings with frequent interaction with other people. Employee may be exposed to environmental conditions such as extreme weather, noise, and vibration, and employee may be exposed to infectious diseases. Work involves functioning in narrow aisles or passageways. Employee will be working with students who have acute mental, emotional, and behavioral healthcare needs. Employee may drive and ride in Open Sky vehicles in support of program activities.


$16 - $17 with rapid advancement up to $19 an hour.
